An Atmosphere of Trust, Respect, and Safety

A schoolwide atmosphere of trust, respect, and safety is very important, and it must occur within the current context of escalating school violence and schools’ preparations for worst-case scenarios. School safety efforts typically include limited building access, schoolwide drills for violent events, and more security guards or increased law enforcement presence. All these essential elements in securing a school make the task of helping families and students feel at home and welcome in their school even more difficult—and all the more important. When family members already feel mistrustful of the institution of education, based on their own experiences as children, the act of making it more difficult to enter the school building in the name of safety can be counterproductive to the mission of parent and guardian involvement and engagement. While children may be better able to focus on learning when they know they are safe, family members may fear they are not welcome.
